Why Serve?

Why Serve?

You might ask yourself, why bother getting involved in serving? I’d like to share some of my own experiences in the hopes that it encourages you to consider getting involved and serve the church body once we’re all back together again.

When I became a Christ follower, I was encouraged to start serving at the church I was attending at the time. I started on the greeting team which, by the way, is a great way to meet people when you’re new! I loved welcoming people into the building with a big smile, answering any questions they might have, and just providing a warm welcome to visitors and regulars alike.

While at the same church and after a few months, there was a need in Kids Ministry. At the time I did not have kids of my own, but I thought sure, I can help. I have to say this was not my favourite serving experience, most likely because I had no real experience with kids. Thinking back now, it was a bit comical since most of the kids walked all over me all evening and I felt lost. Don’t worry, this is not the way it goes at Redemption, the workers love to serve your kids and are excited to be there! And yes, I currently serve in Kids at the Registration area, I love kids and love stepping into their classrooms when needed.

After getting married and once I was a little more mature in my faith, my husband and I started training to become small group leaders. I have amazing memories of people we’ve had in our small groups over the years. Small groups are where you do life together. Yes, there are happy and not so happy times, times of laughter and conquering fears and anxieties, but also times of sadness and brokenness. Small groups can be messy because people are messy, but the life transforming work is very much worth it. We remain in touch with people who have moved away and are now married, have their own families, people who still ask us for prayer and yes, it goes both ways. Small groups can be messy kingdom work but also such a rewarding serving opportunity.

As a family, we participate in the GO Team family events every year – Canada Day and Christmas outreach being the main ones. We feel it’s important for us to do this as family, to set the example for our kids and to make it “normal” to share our faith as a family.

I have only shared from my own experiences but there are so many other ministries at Redemption that could use your unique skill set. I pray you will consider it!

I will leave you with one of my favourite verses, Galatians 6:9-10

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
