HYMNS YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE HEARD: HAVE THINE OWN WAY LORD

HYMNS YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE HEARD: HAVE THINE OWN WAY LORD

Surrender.

Many beautiful songs have been written over the years that speak of our need to die to self and live for Jesus. It’s biblical. It’s necessary. It’s hard.

“Rid me of myself I belong to you”

“Here I am, down on my knees again”

“Whatever my lot, you have taught me to say, it is well with my soul”

“Take my life and let it be, all for you and for Your glory”

The song melodies are sweet to sing but quite challenging to faithfully live out.

Praise God for His grace and mercy. He has been and continues to be patient and kind with me.

Over the years, the church has gifted me with a great number of songs to learn and sing. Growing up I remember singing the hymn “Have Thine Own Way Lord”.  We sang it a lot. I recently looked at the sheet music for the hymn and immediately noticed the time signature was not a common one (9/4), making the music a little more difficult to read. It’s not that hard, but just is a different (from today’s worship music which tends to be 4/4 or 3/4) way of counting and takes some getting used to. It got me thinking, “God bless those volunteer worship leaders and congregations for learning and singing along to them”.

It’s time to flex those music theory muscles.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!

Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.

Mold me and make me after Thy will,

While I am waiting, yielded and still.

The writer springs out with Jeremiah 18:3-4 and Isaiah 64:8. God is the potter and we are the clay. Beautiful imagery. All of life comes from our Creator. He is the artist. He is perfect in His designing abilities. Faithful in His completion.

“Be still and know that I am God”.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!

Search me and try me, Master, today!

Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,

As in Thy presence humbly I bow.

“Search me oh God, and know my thoughts” comes to mind for me.

The Lord knows me and He knows exactly what needs to be done in my heart. James 1:2-4 says, consider it all joy when you experience the tailor made, personalized God-plan for my sanctification.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!

Wounded and weary, help me, I pray!

Power, all power, surely is Thine!

Touch me and heal me, Savior divine.

This season we are all in brings real challenges. Fear. Anxiety. Frustration. Anger. Sickness. Pain. The Lord knows and the psalms give us license to cry out to Jesus.

Fill your mind with truth: He cares for me, hears my cries for mercy and is working all things out in love for my good and His glory.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!

Hold o’er my being absolute sway!

Fill with Thy Spirit ’till all shall see

Christ only, always, living in me.

Let’s walk with confidence. Let’s journey with hope. Let’s trust that our God is doing something in this time that is necessary and marvellous. Let’s freely give the Master Potter the clay, the time, and watch His masterpiece unfold.

Have thine own way Lord.

Surrender.
