Keith Green

Keith Green

You may have noticed, but in the last few weeks I’ve used a couple of Keith Green songs in our services. I’m not sure if they were recognized by most people, but I thought they tied in really well with the passages that were being preached from the book of Philippians.

“This is the Day” and “Rejoice in the Lord Always”.

I don’t believe he wrote those songs, but I always associate them with him. They were children’s worship songs that he mashed together at one of his concerts. You can listen to the chorus medley here.

If you are unfamiliar with Keith Green, it is well worth your time to explore his music and to snag a copy of his Biography entitled, “No Compromise”. You’ll be better for it. He’s most known for his songs “Oh Lord You’re Beautiful” and “There is a Redeemer” written with his wife, Melody.

The man exuded joy in the Lord. His passion for Jesus and love for music was inspirational to so many people, myself included. I received a Keith Green cassette tape when I was around 8 or 9, I think. I wore it out completely. Now thanks to digital music services, I have all his music.

Every once in a while, I navigate back to his albums and sing my face off. I’m reminded of the Lord’s faithfulness and stirred to live with greater urgency. It’s a good exercise for my soul.

I still can’t listen to “Rushing Wind” without crying or “He’ll Take Care of the Rest” without smirking. He had passion for repentance and a call to live for Christ.

Live like each day matters. Live like your time is short. Live for Jesus.

Luke 17:33 says, “Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.”

Lord help me to live for Christ with great rejoicing and passion, knowing that the days are short and you’re coming again.

Make my life a prayer to you

I wanna do what you want me to

No empty words and no white lies

No token prayers no compromise

I wanna shine the light you gave

Through your son you sent to save us

From ourselves and our despair

It comforts me to know you’re really there

Well I wanna thank you now

For being patient with me

Oh it’s so hard to see

When my eyes are on me

I guess I’ll have to trust

And just believe what you say

Oh you’re coming again

Coming to take me away
